Mastering Golden Hour: A Photographer's Guide
The golden hour — that magical window of time just after sunrise or before sunset — is often considered the holy grail of natural lighting. But capturing it consistently requires more than just showing up at the right time.
Over the years, I've developed a workflow that helps me make the most of every golden-hour session. It starts with preparation: scouting the location days in advance, understanding how the light will move across the landscape, and planning compositions that take advantage of the warm, directional quality of the light.
One of the most important lessons I've learned is to start shooting before the golden hour technically begins. The transition from daylight to golden hour is gradual, and some of the most interesting images come from that in-between moment when the light is changing rapidly.
Post-processing plays a crucial role as well. I tend to warm the white balance slightly, enhance the natural contrast that golden light creates, and pay special attention to the highlights — ensuring they glow without losing detail.
